Jody Sin is a lawyer and mediator based out of Hong Kong. She is also the director of Resolution Mediation Consultants, Ltd. and a distinguished fellow of the International Academy of Mediators. 

About Jody Sin

Jody Sin is a lawyer and a mediator based out of Hong Kong. She is also the director of Resolution Mediation Consultants, Ltd. and a distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators. Ms. Sin is a member of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and Hong Kong Law Society. She has substantial experience handling commercial litigation, building management disputes, property litigation, arbitration, and cases in a number of other areas.

As a solicitor, Ms. Sin has worked in major international law firms where she specialized in civil litigation and has significant experience in a wide range of commercial disputes. Beginning in October of 2011, Ms. Sin started a full-time mediation practice where she mediates a broad array of disputes. She is also a mediation trainer where she teaches accredited mediator courses as well as courses and programs on mediation and negotiation.

Litigation Practice

Ms. Sin was a senior associate in the Litigation and Regulatory Group (LRG) in an international law firm. She practiced general commercial litigation and advised clients on a wide range of commercial disputes including contentious employment matters, joint venture and shareholders disputes, contracts, property, defamation, and personal injuries as well as health and safety litigation.

Beginning in 2006, Ms. Sin moved to the role of professional support lawyer of the LRG. She designed, implemented, and maintained a standard document and knowhow system for the use of lawyers in the practice group. She also developed and implemented different training programs for practitioners at all levels and taught in-house training sessions. She was promoted to be the senior professional support lawyers and remained so until she left the firm to commence her mediation practice.

Mediation Practice

Ms. Sin received her first mediation accreditation from the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) in 2001. Sine then, she has been accredited by the Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Ltd (HKMAAL), and the Law Society of Hong Kong (LSHK).

Apart from local accreditation, Ms. Sin has received certification and accreditation from distinguished institutions outside Hong Kong, including the International Mediation Institute (IMI), and Qianhai International Litigation and Mediation Centre under Quanhai Court in the People’s Republic of China. She is also a panel mediator of the United Nations Office of the Ombudsman, a Global Mediation Panelist, and worked on the Mediation Mechanism and Investment Agreement between HKSAR and Mainland China under Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement.

Ms. Sin has successfully mediated a broad spectrum of disputes, including employment, discrimination and workplace issues, professional indemnity claims involving solicitors, barristers, doctors and accountants, shareholders and partnership disputes, defamation, intellectual property, personal injuries, probate disputes, and financial disputes in matrimonial matters.

Who’s Who Legal: Mediation (2020) described Ms. Sin as “an established figure” in the Hong Kong market, renowned for conducting “excellent” facilitative and evaluative mediations.

ADR Achievements

  • Ms. Sin has been actively involved in the Hong Kong Mediation Council, a division of the HKIAC, where she is currently the Vice-Chairperson. She is also a member of the Steering Committee on Mediation of the Department of Justice under the Secretary of Justice, Hong Kong. She also sits on the Mediation Committee and the Mediator Admissions Committee of the Law Society of Hong Kong.
  • In 2019, Ms. Sin was awarded JAMS Weinstein International Fellowship.
  • She has been a Distinguished Fellow of International Academy of Mediators (IAM) since 2016 and became a member of the Board of Governors in 2020.
  • Ms. Sin became the first CINERGY certified conflict management coach in Hong Kong in 2015.

ADR Training

  • Ms. Sin has received extensive and advanced training in mediation and negotiation from Harvard Negotiation Institute, a program on Negotiation from Harvard Law School, and from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution of Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law.
  • She has also received mediation training in different models, including evaluative and transformative mediation and restorative justices.

ADR Teaching and Mentoring

  • In 2020, Ms. Sin was appointed by the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong to develop and teach a new elective course, “Essential Lawyering Skills in Practice” where negotiation and conflict resolution skills are covered in the course.
  • Ms. Sin has been an adjunct professor of the University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) since 2019.
  • Commencing in 2016, Ms. Sin has been a guest lecturer on the “Use of Chinese in Legal Practice – Mediation,” for University of Hong Kong LLB and PCLL programs. She is also a certified trainers of the Mediation Training Institute (MTI), and teaches a Workplace Mediation Executive Certificate Course for HKU SPACE.
  • Ms. Sin has also been an assessor in the accreditation of mediators to the panel of HKMAAL, HKIAC and the Hong Kong Law Society.
  • Beginning in 2019, Ms. Sin has been involved in the ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition as a mediator and as a judge. In 2020, she was a judge for the final round of the competition.
  • She has delivered lectures, seminars, and workshops on mediation and negotiation for lawyers, mediators, and professionals in governmental departments and organizations.
