Constantin-Adi Gavrilă is a well-known international mediator with twenty years of extensive experience in the field of mediation.

Mr. Gavrilă is based in Romania and is the co-founder and general manager of the Craiova Mediation Center Association. He works extensively with the ADR Center as a Senior Mediation and ADR Expert, training mediators and advising governments and other clients in their efforts to promote and implement mediation.

From 2007-2017, Mr. Gavrilă served as Co-Chair of the Independent Standards Commission convened by the International Mediation Institute (IMI). In 2020, Mr. Gavrilă was selected for his mediation expertise by the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ), Council of Europe, to provide services related to the field of mediation in the implementation of CEPEJ cooperation programs.

Mr. Gavrilă received his Ph.D. from the University of Craiova with emphasis on Mediation and Access to Justice.

Mediation Practice

In his mediation practice, mediation training, and mediation development consultancy work, Mr. Gavrilă has a substantial level of experience as a mediator, a strong understanding of general mediation theory and practice, and excellent skills in the effective use of the mediation process and techniques. With academic degrees in both engineering and law, Mr. Gavrilă brings a unique mindset to his mediation practice that proves particularly useful in designing processes or structures, as well as in application to legal substance and content.

Mr. Gavrilă has mediated hundreds of family, civil and commercial cases, both domestic and international, including multi-party, company-community cases specific to the development context, for which he is working with the Office of the Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman (CAO), the independent recourse mechanism for IFC and MIGA, the private sector lending arms of the World Bank Group.

He has also been repeatedly appointed as an International Mediator Expert by the Independent Project Accountability Mechanism (IPAM) of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). He was similarly selected by the accountability complaints mechanisms of the Green Climate Fund and the European Investment Bank.

The clients, individuals, companies, public institutions, governments and international organizations Mr. Gavrilă works with appreciate his gentle and honest style, complemented by a mediation approach that considers the cultural parameters of each participant.

ADR Achievements and Training
Since 2002, Mr. Gavrilă has served as a trainer and international senior expert, facilitating and supporting projects on the development of ADR and mediation, working with international donors, governments and domestic organizations from more than twenty-five countries, mostly located in Eastern Europe and West and Central Asia, but also in America, Africa and the Caribbean. Projects include: policy development, mediation legislation, development of public and private mediation providers, and capacity-building for mediators, advisors, referrals, users or system influencers.

Mr. Gavrilă is a skilled mediation trainer. Throughout his career, he has trained more than 1,000 mediators in Romania and abroad, including basic and advanced mediation training, as well as training mediation trainers. His knowledge, skills and experience wrapped in a gentle, open, honest and practical style received the highest marks in his trainees’ feedback. He is also very comfortable in using online communication technology for training.

ADR Teaching and Mentoring
Mr. Gavrilă is an active teacher and writer. He is a lecturer for two Romanian universities, and the author of numerous books, book chapters and scientific articles. He is the coordinator of the “Mediation Campus” established by the Faculty of Law within Craiova University. His projects have been edited and published by local and international publishing houses, including: Oxford University Press, Kluwer Law International and Bloomsbury Professional. He is also a permanent contributor to the “Kluwer International Mediation Blog.”

Among other awards, Mr. Gavrilă was honored with the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) International Development Committee’s 2009 Outstanding Leadership Award for outstanding contributions to international conflict resolution. Mr. Gavrilă is a JAMS International Fellow and holds an IMI international mediation certification.
